Question:
I have to do a report on tomato allergy for my final exam. I have found some
resources on the net but not a whole lot. If anyone knows of any
Answer:
I get delayed asthmatic reaction to potatoes, eggplant, peppers (Capsicum) and
tomatoes, in descending family of severity. This is personal experience,
beginning in 1996, not from the Internet. Common link between these fruits and
vegetables is family Solanaceae. Other people who are allergic to tomatoes are
OK with potatoes, so the allergenic principle with them is different than what
affects me. In May 1996 I had intermittent hives, part-time anal pain, and part-time anal
itch, believed to be from the potatoes, since these symptoms gradually cleared
after I quit potatoes. I can't reproduce these symptoms, since respiratory
symptoms in the throat and trachea would get me first.
Don't know any links you could go to but, the hives and rashes are very
common. Seems if you can tolerate potatoes the allergy moves in the
direction of fruits and citric acid in some families. Growing up in areas
that had large orchards and truck farms, where kids ate lots of fruit as a
child, has been given as a reason for the intolerance, now as adults,
according to my brother-in-laws doctor, mine just laughed and said he hoped
I liked water and rice. So if you are thinking of being a doctor, please try
and be one that gives a damn about the suffering of your patients. I am
sure you have already checked out The Food Allergy Book, by Dr. William
