Question:
We bought a Viszla puppy 5 months ago and I am beginning to really
suffer with allergies. I'm terribly allergic to cats and I knew I was
supposed to be allergic to dogs but I'd lived with one before
(boyfriend's dog) about 10 years ago and had no problem.
However, if our exuberant puppy licks me anywhere I have to go wash
the site immediately and even so, I'll have welts and itching for a
while after. I don't have asthma, as I do with cats, but my skin has
begun to itch terribly. If I handle our dog I have to wear rubber
gloves. Also, he likes to rub up against me when he wants to play,
and then I have to change my clothes because I'll touch my clothes and
then my eye or something and it's awful.
My allergist says to give the dog away but we all love him and while I
know it's probably the best thing to do I thought I'd come to you all
and see if there isn't some other solution.
Answer:
How about: Keep the dog, give away your allergy. There are a number of ways to think about allergies. One useful way
is to stress: an allergy is a big mistake... literally. Somehow, the
immune system has mis-learned; it has identified a once harmless
substance to be an enemy it must fight... making that substance an
allergen. This often happens thru a kind of learning called classical
conditioning. It is now possible to quickly re-train the brain to NOT
react to the allergen... to forget the allergy.
Go to your local yellow pages, etc. and find someone who is an
Neuro-Linguistic Programmer (NLP). They might be under something like
"therapist". Ask them if they are trained in the allergy relief
techniques or if they can refer you to someone who is... hey i know what your going through! ive had a dog for two years and
recently got a puppy and seem to have the same reaction to him that i
normally have with cats,
as i am really allergic to cats. puppys have what is called puppy dander
from their
skin.sometimes you can see it on them,it looks like dandruff or dry skin.
this is normal for puppies because they are growing so fast their skin is
doing the same.
four things to try
1: try changing food my dog was worse on the expensive eukanuba,he's now
on the science diet.caution change over to the new food gradually, mix
50/50 then
after a few days dry 100%.if you don't you'll be cleaning up the squirts !
2:bath the puppy with cooler water and use a gentle shampoo with
moisturizer
oatmeal shampoo is good.by keeping the skin clean and moist it will keep
the dander down.
3:you can add fatty acid supplements to his food, see your vet
4:get a good air filter for the house, one with an ion generator is
best.don't
let the puppy go in your bed room.you spend 8 hours sleeping,no sense of
doing it with the one your allergic to.
