Question:
Earlier this year I attended a pet show at the Arlington International Race
Course in Arlington Heights, IL. I talked to a lady who had a natural
treatment that could be purchased a GNC stores to help prevent/treat
seizures. I wrote what the product was down, but of course I lost the
paper. Does anyone know of this product?
Answer:
Yeah, snake oil. Seriously, seizures can be caused by a large
number of things. They are a symptom, not a disease. It would
be extremely irresponsible for someone to look for a product,
natural or otherwise, to treat the seizures without determining
the underlying cause. And equally irresponsible for anyone to
sell such a product without cautioning buyers to see their vet
first. I have been fighting my best dog's seizures ofr a year and a half. We have
gone traditional routes: Phenobarbital, Potassium Bromide, Felbatol (that is
more experimaental) and other human drugs (which have problems being
metabolized to quickly.) We also use valium. We have also used gold bead
implants, (Dr. Durkes did the work, he invented the procedure) and
accupuncture, chinese herbs, doggypsychics, various vitamins, taurine, milk
thistle (for the damage to the liver from the Pb. Any of these HAVE worked for
various dogs on the epi lists I am on. For Quark, 2 legs shy of his UDX, and
so close to getting his VST, though, nothing has curtailed his seizuring, which
began a year in March. He had the MRI, but nothing there. I suggest getting
on the Epileptic Canine list and reading...a high volume list, it will give you
information traditional and non. And very dangerous to take a dog off "traditional" anti-epileptic
drugs and put them on "natural" cures, in case anyone's thinking of
doing that. Many people whose dogs have epilepsy or other seizure disorders try
various natural or homeopathic remedies *in conjuction with*
traditional drug therapy. Often this is out of desperation, as so
many cases of canine seizures are difficult to control and people will
try anything to help their animal. But usually, even the most vocal
advocates of homeopathic remedies know there isn't any "natural"
product that will prevent seizures.
I read a website (sorry, I lost the URL) about a cocker spaniel who
went into siezures every time he ate something with MSG in it. It
took the owners of the dog years to make the connection, since the
seizures happened several hours to a day after eating the offending
scrap, but once the owners figured out the problem, the dog never
suffered another siezure. Maybe your dog has some kind of unusual
food allergy?
