Question:
My wife is in the middle of allergy shot treatments (weekly, on 16th
week), and I am wondering if there might be an effect on the child if
she gets pregnant now. The doctor just said if she gets pregnant they
will change to a maintenance dose, not increasing doses for the nine
months, then continue back on schedule. Anyone have any more info or
real experience?
Answer:
That's pretty much what they did for me. They reduced my maintenance dose to
the minimum for the nine months and then gradually increased the dosages
after I returned for shots (I took a small 'vacation' from shots for about
4-6 weeks after the delivery).
While I don't think it had a negative impact on my daughter, I found it
frustrating to have my treatment set back a year. On the other hand, my
daughter's allergies are milder than my son's; I was taking shots during my
first pregnancy (my daughter), but not with my second pregnancy (my son).
An FYI - during pregnancy, about one-third of women have worse allergy
symptoms, one third have milder allergy symptoms, and one third find no
difference. I was fortunate, but did have a plan set up with the allergist
and my midwife in case my symptoms were exacerbated.
yeah, like A.., they dropped me down to about 1/2 my maintenance dose
during my pregnancy (I was only getting shots 1x a month anyway) and then
brought me back up about 2 months after my son was born. Supposedly, the
shots may make Chase (my son) less allergic to things, but who knows?
