Question:
Does anybody know something about sugar allergie? I know someone who get`s a
rash on her legs a few days after she has eaten some candy, drank cola etc.
Are there people on this website who have the same problem, and perhaps a
solution for it?
Answer:
I am going to re-post this important message.
Everyone - regardless of allergies should please pay
attention, especially those who have multiple food
allergies or "99% foods allergies". Corn syrup is
not a naturally occurring food. It is corn starch
modified into sugar by sulfurization. At present, the consumers have no choice because
corn syrup is used as the sweetener in most packaged
foods and beverages in the USA. This is tragic.
Everyone should take action against this situation,
try elimination, and if you see a difference, avoid
products containing corn syrup. Then the food
processors will get the message - in their
pocketbook. Just like consumer awareness resulted in
addition of fiber and reduction of fat in the
breakfast cereal, they will produce alternates with
sugar as the only natural sweetener.
When a choice is available to consumers, it will be
easier to try elimination and to get some answers
through research.
Please be sure that we do not to confuse the two -
sensitivity to corn syrup - and - allergy to corn.
Even when you do not have an IgE mediated allergy to
corn, grass, etc. your other allergies, and some
other conditions, could be worsening due to corn
syrup. This is especially important if you have
problems with various, seemingly unrelated foods,
and thus, you have been either labeled as having
multiple food allergies.

In contrast, here are the "facts" about corn syrup
(a mockery, from USDA, of course):

Corn syrup may be harming everyone. This is what I
am trying to stress here. I do not want us to
confuse this with an allergy to corn products. That
will make everyone else complacent, as if it is a
problem of corn allergy sufferers only.
We need to make everyone aware of this potential
problem with this chemical compound, corn syrup.
Half, or more, will think that you are crazy. But
that does not matter when so many of our kids are
drugged up because they cannot sit still in class or
because they cannot breathe. Their number is rising
everyday.
We need to investigate the hidden dangers of corn
syrup, independent of food allergy. I am posting it
under food allergies because problems caused by corn
syrup may mimic "multiple food allergies". Believe
me, no one will do any research until we all start
avoiding it. Everyone, regardless of allergy, should
try some weeks off corn syrup and see if they can
feel any difference.
But how can one do this, when, it is slipped into
almost everything we eat? Nanne, all this may not
relate to you because corn syrup use may not be as
prevalent in Holland as it is in the USA.
The allergy may not be to sugar per se, but to a particular kind of
sweetener such as corn syrup or cane suger, or even to a commonly used
preservative that's found in all these items.
A food diary will help to figure out the precise allergen. (Write down
ALL foods eaten every day, and write down how she feels every day, and
then start looking for common factors.)
The best solution, once the particular allergen is known, is to avoid
eating it.
