Question:
I have just found out that after using MSM successfully for over a year I can
no longer take it. This past week, I have been having extreme rapid heart
beat (which I take a beta blocker for), and the shakes with feeling of
electricity going through me.
Panic City!! Thought it might be the BB but you cannot just stop that med.
I was in awful pain all over. Muscles spasming. Cutting my pain pills in
half for some relief....maybe I was allergic there.
I have had a good 36 hours now. So, because I hurt so bad and know that MSM
takes that away, I took a capsule only half full. Within 20 minutes my heart
rate soared and the shakes were really bad. I took my allegy med and have
calmed a bit.
I am SO DAMN MAD!!!! I was getting so much relief from this. Have not
changed brands and there is no filler to be causing this. Anyone else have
this reaction after being on something this long?
Answer:
I'm sorry about your problems with MSM. I couldn't take it more than a
few months and never got above 3 grams before I had symptoms something
like you had. My blood pressure went too low to be functional. It improved
when I stopped taking supplements. The only one that made it drop upon
restarting each in turn was MSM. It sounds like a detox to me - how long did it take - oh, you took an
anti-allergy medication? what was that? Our bodies change. I've tried to say this again and again but somehow...
people think they're addicted to something when they have to increase
their dosages. One doesn't take medicine for no reason so why couldn't
it be that something has changed about one's own body? I took magnesium for quite awhile way back when and suddenly found I was
intolerant. But I didn't say I had an allergic reaction - I just
couldn't take it anymore and I assumed (I know, I know) that it was
because I had "topped myself up". But I did not *assume* that there was
anything wrong with the medication. Now on the other hand, you're not getting the relief from pain that you
were. I would be looking for an increase in stress levels - recently -
and a possible worsening of something that MSM relates to. My theory - and it's just a theory - is that cell function is improved
by MSM because of its action on cell walls. Apparently they use sulphur
related stuff like MSM to develop strong and resilient and also
*permeable* walls. That means an improvement in stuff going in and in
stuff coming out. So stuff coming out is generally headed for the trash
disposal. I recently had a "healing crisis" that's just beginning to settle down.
And I've been feeling pretty darned punk, let me tell you. But my body
was obviously (still is) getting rid of yicky stuff that's been hanging
around for *months*. Plus I've been having those "ga-boinks" (I call 'em) with - I expect -
my heart. Like little but very distinct hiccoughs... well, I suppose a
heart can hiccough, too... But you're describing a very distinct reaction. I think you need to take
a look at everything else you've been doing - especially in the stress
department - and see whether there isn't some kind of case for your just
sort of cooling yer jets, as they say... I feel that anything we do that's liable to increase energy and activity
has to be supported by a complete program of supplementation. You can't
be spotty about this sort of thing IMO. I would suggest the same thing
even if all someone was doing was taking Prozac. You can't just drive
your body if it's short on the things it needs to work. For example,
what about minerals? what about vitamin C and the other things you need
to take with vitamin C? and what about the B complex, the B-12 and
folate (in equal amounts) and what about the NADH? People are forever talking about detox with MSM. Dr J feels sulphur is
another energy system entirely (at least I think that's what he said).
And there's the whole thing about eating fresh fruits and vegetables -
if nothing more, greens, and if not those, then liquid chlorophyll. Our needs are pretty broad. You can't just flog a horse and expect the
poor thing to go on pep pills - it needs hay and water and rest. I think MSM is like anything else. A substance has an effect and
sometimes it's not wonderful. I can see that just improving cell
function would promote a lot of stuff coming out of cells where it's
been hanging around and building up for ages - very slowly of course -
but it amounts to a toilet not flushing completely. There's always a
little left behind and over time it adds up to a lot. So I don't see how one *wouldn't* have at least *some* reactions to MSM.
Waste from cells. And I can see it would be really important to take
enough vitamin C to handle that detox. It's like a Herxheimer's. Anyway. I sure hope this helps. However from everything that's happened
with me, I'd really hesitate to call this an "allergic" reaction knowing
how we usually think of "allergic reactions". What I've found is that
one doesn't necessarily stay "allergic". Plus I feel the reaction isn't
to the MSM but to whatever your cells are letting out. Except for
another possibility which is that you are "topped up". I shouldn't think
that would have taken away your pain - I really think vitamin C is very
important in supporting the action of MSM and getting rid of the toxics
that leave the cells when one's taking MSM.
